When starting out, do not fall into the trap that so many entrepreneurs fall into
of so being so preoccupied by managing their business that they don't have much time or energy left to marketing it.
Also realize that site visitors will not magically appear, you will certainly have to put some real work into it. The big thing to remember while you are marketing your home-based business website is that there are many ways to promote it effectively, not just one or two as many
home business owners seem to believe. Too many entrepreneurs rely heavily on the the search engines for the bulk of their visitors, for example.
While search engines will in fact eventually send you the majority of your hits, they tend to take a lot of time to index and rank your site. You may have heard of the Google "holding tank"
or the Google "sandbox" which can take up to six months to get out of. While you are waiting for the major search engines to kick in and start sending substantial traffic to your home business web page, there
are many other things you can do in the meantime to build up traffic. I suggest you read one of Conrad Jay Levinson's 'Guerrila Marketing Guide' series of books for an in depth look at the many, many ways there are to promote your site either for free or for very little cost.
Susan Sweeney also has a comprehensive resource on the subject entitled '101 Ways to Promote your Website'. These books will get your head buzzing with new ideas and new directions to go. As Levenson said, the internet is a guerrila marketers paradise, especially when compared to traditional media outlets which are generally very costly and especially risky
for the small home business owner on a fixed budget. You will first want to submit your site to both major and niche directories while waiting for your site to appear on the primary search engines as this will enhance your ranking by helping the search spiders find you faster.
You will probably want to create a site map on your site to help these spiders navigate through it's entirety.
You can then look for blogs that are relevent to your home business and post your website url to them, if they allow it. They usually do if you have something relevent to add to the discussion.
The same thing applies for forums. This is another way to bring qualified traffic to your site for free.
Another type of forum is called a newsgroup. Sometimes you can post your url there if it is within the rules of that specific newsgroup, and each one is a little different.
If you do post, make sure you only post the url in the signature line at the bottom of the post in question. This is considered proper protocal and will reduce your chances of annoying anyone.
