  • Writing Sales Copy for your Home Business

Sales copy, in the form of a sales letter, which can be sent by e-mail or regular mail, is a good way to get your message out there to potential customers. One of the first basic rules of writing compelling sales copy is to ask questions of the reader because, when you ask a question, the reader feels that he or she should answer it. This gets them engaged and thinking about the product or service you are trying to sell. It is usually best if the questions asked can best be answered by a Yes. You can also mention a problem that a reader may have, and then provide the solution in the form of the product or service that you happen to offer.

Offering something for free is one of the most effective methods of writing sales copy used by marketers. This tried and true method is effective because the freebie can be almost anything, including information. For example you could offer free tips or a free report, which of course is usually free for you as well. A free e-zine or newsletter are also examples of free information you can give out to entice potential customers. Studies have shown that the word free in and of itself can increase the effectiveness of your sales letter. It could also be in a contest format, such as a free contest entry. Free product samples, such as pet food sample, are also very effective. When you are writing sales copy, always transfer ownership over to the reader. In other words, always say "you will save" instead of "there is a savings of" and so on. When proofreading your work, look for instances where you can transfer ownership to the reader and do it as much as possible.

Whenever possible, use power words like "free" and "savings". Use short words and short sentences whenever possible. Write as if you were talking to someone and not at them. Testemonials can be very important as well. After you have proofread your work, try to have a another person proofread it as a second pair of eyes could find mistakes that you did not.
