  • Promotional methods for your Home Business

After you have built your website the first step is to submit it to the search engines and directories of the internet. You can submit your site to the indexes manually for free by going to each engine and looking for the "add url" or "add a site" button of each one. After you have submitted your site you may have decided that you do not want or cannot afford to use paid services such as pay per click (PPC) advertising like Overture or Google ad words. In this case there are numerous methods of generating traffic for your website which are free. The catch is they are generally more time consuming than the paid methods.

The first method you should consider is a link exchange. The best sites to swap links with are those that are similiar but non-competing. If your site sold premium dog food, for example, you might want to swap links with a dog training or pet sitting website. Or if your site relates to a sports equipment rental business in Aspen, you may want to link to a Colorado travel or tourism site. Link exchanges will build traffic to your site while also increasing the pagerank and link popularity of your site in the eyes of the search engines, which generally rank you higher based on how many links are coming to your site. After that you may want to start adding your site to message boards and free for all pages. A good place to start is located at ffa.net. This will not send a huge rush of traffic to your site, but what traffic there is will be instant. It may also help a little with your link popularity. The next thing you may want to do is to post to Newsgroups. Just do not spam. Spamming generally means "cross-posting" or posting the same message to multiple newsgroups. This will get you "flamed" quickly. To find newsgroups, simply go to the Google search engine and click on the groups button there and sign up for an account. Use a throw away e-mail for that and the ffa's due to spam.

Next off you may want to post to some of the many free classifieds that exist on the net. The best method is to search for 'free classifieds' on your favorite search engines and submit to those in the top 50. That way you know they are not a waste of time as some of them get very little traffic. You may want to post to blogs but only if you have something useful to add to the discussion, otherwise they consider it to be spamming. You will be allowed to post your website address which will send you some instant traffic. That will be useful while you are waiting for the search engine and directory listings to kick in. And you will want to write an article or two (actually the more the better) about your subject matter and post it to content providers. You get to link to your website from the bottom of your article and this can increase traffic substantially. Submit to content providers which provide articles for webmasters, such as ideamarketers.com, articlecity.com, www.ezinearticles.com and freesticky.com. Over time, more webmasters will post your article on their site or in their ezine. You get a link from their site each time they do this. That means increased traffic and pagerank. This is one of the most overlooked free methods of building traffic there is.
