Developing your Home Business Idea
When you are developing your initial Home Business plan, you will want the majority of your market research to focus on the competition. You want to see if it is particularly crowded in your field. if that is the case, you will want to know if there is any particular niche that can be filled within that crowded field of business.
Many times, businesses cater to the same type of customer, but then ignore some particular niche. For example, in recent months it has been reported that the hispanic community has been underserved in some areas, such as in certain Spanish language websites. Remember that there is almost always an overlooked niche that you can find so keep your eyes open.
If you think you are late to the market, that may not necessarily be a huge problem because the pioneers of the new market need to spend a lot of money and time educating buyers and creating product awareness in general. So to a certain degree you might be able to capitalize on their marketing efforts. And of course you can learn from their mistakes and use their success as a broad roadmap for your own.
Do not be concerned if you cannot find or cannot afford research information about the business field you are looking to enter because really, the chief method of learning about a particular industry or business is to simply talk to the small business owners who are in it.
Do not think they will not be open with you. Even if some aren't, you will learn a great deal by simply going out and meeting these samll business owners. Details will sharpen and ideas will be consolidated in your mind.
For every small business owner who considers you a potential competitor and does not want to give you much time and/or information, there will be many more who will be willing to share a lot of time with you and tell you how he or she got their start, how the business runs, pifalls to aviod and general pros and cons of that particular business.
On that note, however, avoid contacting your potential direct competitors.
