One of the most overlooked methods for generating business and traffic to your home business website is proper use of the signature line,
also known as a 'Sig File'. Email has grown to the point where nearly five Billion messages a day are sent
via electronic delivery. Amazing isn't it, considering that Electronic mail is a relatively new communication medium, achieving mainstream use less than a decade ago.
Here is an even more amazing statistic: of those five billion or so messages sent each day, about half of
them arrive without a signature! That is an awful lot of free advertising opportunities wasted. In fact the lowly sig line is probably one of the most overlooked advertising methods out there today.
It seems to be a modest method, but it is actually very powerful. Just refer to Corey Rudl's work. He has been one of the most successful internet marketers of the last decade and he is a strong propnent of the signature line. It is not enouph to have your identity in the header of the message,
you want it in the signature field so you can put a full name and web address, along with possibly other information as well.
The great thing about a signature line is that it is always a completely accepted way of advertising and getting your name and web address out there.
It is always considered to be proper to include a signature line, and no one will ever accuse you of spam or think of you poorly for it.
It is very easy to include a sig file with all of your correspondence. There are basically 2 simple ways to do it. One, type your name at
the end of every message you compose. Or just
compose a signature file and tell your email
program to save it and automatically insert it at
the end of every message you send. You can also include a web address (URL), phone number or any other information that you wish.
It may even include a defining statement, or selling sentence, about what you can do for the reader, much like an author byline or resource box.
I recommend the second option of automating the process. It will save you a lot of time in the long run and all of the major email providers allow you
to automatically create a sig file.
As a general rule of thumb, your signature line should be between
three and five lines and perhaps forty to fifty characters total. Over time hundreds, even thousands of people will read your signature line. That is a lot of free advertising.
How many times have you gone back and dug out an email from weeks or even months before to find a pertinent piece of information or an old email address you had forgotten.
People do that with your old email messages as well so there will be a residual effect of people seeing your sig line. And don't overlook putting your signature line on any
message board posts, forums, newsgroups or other discussion groups that you happen to participate in. It is also fully accepted to put your contact information,
including a web site address, in these fields. This will enhance your reputation as an expert in your field, increase traffic to your site as well as your link popularity on the search engines!
