Today the recovering economy is reliant on service industry growth, though six thousand manufaturing related jobs play a significant role in the economy still.

There is, however, some good news on the impact of the Chinese economy on U.S. workers emerged today. The growing Chinese economy is heavily dependent on increasing steel output. While they do not purchase American steel, their consumption of the materials to make steel - iron ore - is on the rise. 6 Iron Mines in Minnesota are back in operation and benefitting greatly from Chinese demand according to the Christian Science Monitor.

"If you'd have said a year ago this would be happening, I'd never have believed it," says Joe Strlekar, president of local steelworkers 6860, whose workers were already training for new jobs after being laid off in May, only to get their jobs back when the mine reopened. "Instead of everything coming back into this country from China, it's good to have something going the other way."

Chinese steel consumption at booming rates is expected to continue quite some time.

In the 2nd part of a three part series, the Washington Times visited Courtland, New York where many factories have laid off workers in the last decade, including Carrier air conditioners and Smith-Corona typewriters. The key for workers and companies is to find niche markets with little competition, to obtain higher skills (workers) and better technology (companies). Finding an individual's or corporation's niche is the only way to obtain better than average returns and higher wages. Exploiting the niche is today's top survival strategy.
