The effects of downsizing, layoffs and the outsourcing of American jobs
Whether you are a textile worker in Virginia, a steel worker in Pittsburg or a chemical plant worker in New Jersey, chances are
that you are familiar with the exporting of American jobs overseas. This is commonly referred to as "outsourcing" and is so common it is has become part of the corporate
culture and jargon. This trend is not going away anytime soon but rather will continue for some time. A companies stock generally goes up after a major downsizing. This profitability is enouph
to keep the pattern of mass layoffs going strong for some time. Part of this is because of the transformation of in America and elsewhere from the industrial age to the information age. This transformation occured arounf 1989 and the first
casulaties were job security and retirement benefits. This pattern makes the establishment of a home business more important than ever to creat some level of financial indepenence to America's hard pressed workers.
To discuss this growing trend is an article by Charles Huckaby of Tennessee. Charles is a noted writer on a number of topics and his websites include 1sthowtoworkathome.com and homebusinessfactory.com. More information on this is located in the resource box at the end of the article:
United States Layoff & Corporate Downsizing News
by Charles Huckaby
Lewiston (Maine), formerly built on textile and shoe manufacturing, now has had to change to a service-based economy.
Though NAFTA has been blamed for the demise, one business owner also notes that high taxes and insurance costs played their part.
Burt's Bees, a manufacturer of personal care items, moved from Maine to North Carolina because of Maine's onerous tax and regulatory burden. The Maine Department of Labor - according to the founder of Burt's Bees - drove them out of the state with their anti-business attitudes as reported by Inc. magazine.
It remains to be seen how much anti-entrepreneurial regulation has inhibited recovery from NAFTA.
