  • Does your Home Business site need it's own domain?

If you have been active with your home business for any length of time, you probably have a website or use the web in some way. If you have a web site, the question will probably arise regarding whether or not you should register your own domain name, assuming you have not done so already. Is this a good idea? In my opinion, yes it is. While your home business site may be able to function without it's own exclusive domain name, it is a good idea to have one for several reasons. First of all, it makes your home business website appear much more professional. If your site is merely an extension of a root domain or url you may appear small time to some people. While at first blush this may not seem to be the end of the world, when balancing the cost verses your image you have to ask yourself if it is worth it to scrimp on buying a domain name when having one can significantly improve your important image. I mean, nowadays you can buy a domain name for as little as seven dollars! So yes, I would recommend buying your own domain name whether your percieved market is small, such as a Rhode Island skating site, or abroad, such as a California Travel Agency. So the benefit versus price would appear to be a no-brainer. Another factor to consider is that root domains are much easier to remember and write down than long sub-domains, sub-directories, or extensions. Remember that this domain can go on business cards where space is at a premium adn it would be nice to be able to casually mention your domain over the phone ar at a party and have a chance of the person actually remembering it. Another important aspect to consider is that search engines generally give a higher ranking to sites that have a root domain and some search engines and directories will not even list your home business site if it is not have it's own domain. With these factors in mind, it seems clear that having your own domain is a great benefit to your home business site if not a complete necessity. But if you need more convincing I have included an article by home business writer Bill Davis. His article is entitled "Moving On Up to Your Own Domain". More information is available about Bill and his company in the resource box at the end of the article:

Maybe you thought you would just start small and did not really need your own domain name. So you found a host that offered sub-domains and did not have to spend money on domain name registration. You get your domain name put on your business cards and brochures and start handing them out.... Go to the Next Page.
