  • Keys to preventing "Home Business Burnout"

As a home business entrepreneur, you probably already know the importance of keeping yourself from getting exhausted or "burned out". Even if you have only been working your home business for a relatively short period of time, you were probably already aware of the need to maintain your energy level while you were involved in your other work, whether it was as a corporate manager, blue collar worker or whatever. Most people learn from their life experience to pace themselves, eat properly, exercise regularly, and to get enouph rest. But while these things are important at every stage in a person's life, they are especially important when launching a home business, because the mental, physical and emotional stress can potentially be so high. This is because running a home business will demand that you wear a lot of hats. As an employee, you were probably used to focusing on a specific job and leaving other details such as accounting, budget, supervision and repairs to others. But the home business world generally requires a wider range of responsibilities than that. Much like an actor that decides to also take on directing and producing responsibilities, the home business owner must rise to the challenge in the face of stiff competition, often on his/her own and often with the life savings on the line and fewer (if any) benefits.

To help prevent an influx of stress which can ultimately lead to burnout, there are a few steps than can help. Perhaps the most important is simply your attitude. Try not to make a mountain out of a molehill. As you learn about running a home business, mistakes will inevitably happen. They do to everyone. Do not make a bigger deal out of mistakes than you have to. In fact, it is best to look at mistakes as learning opportunities. The same logic applies to incidents that appear to be bad luck. In such a circumstance it is easy to think that you are being victimized but do not over dramatize these incidents because they too happen to every home business entrepreneur at one time or another. You control your own destiny, not some unseen force that you might imagine is guiding your fate.

It is also very important to eat properly. If you try to subsist on coffee and doughnuts, it may work for a while, but eventually you will reach the burnout phase. You need balanced meals and vitamins and minerals to combat the stress of running a home business. Certain vitamins directly or indirectly combat stress. You also need plenty of water. Being dehydrated is to take the fast track to burnout. Also make sure to work in relaxation and recreation. In my experience, anything that diverts your mind for a few hours can help. So going to the cinema can even help. But you also need to take long vacations or a holiday off periodically. Swimming is a great stress buster and seems to clear the mind, leaving you fresh and ready for the next challenge. And finnally, get enouph sleep. Everyone needs different amounts of sleep but generally try to get six or seven hours a night.
